Mijn Cuba-reis was veel meer dan een gewone vakantietrip. Het gaf mij de mogelijkheid om kennis te maken met de manier van leven en werken van de gemiddelde Cubaan. Maar ook van de soms tumultueuze geschiedenis en hoe de Cubaanse bevolking zich in het dagelijkse leven weet te organiseren, wat niet altijd een sinecure is. Het leverde tal van inzichten op die al te vaak aan de aandacht van een doorsnee toerist ontsnappen. Omdat ik even verder in hun samenleving kon doordringen dan de gebruikelijke toeristische clichés werd deze reis een unieke ervaring. Net daarom heb ik ook bewust gekozen voor de traditionele zwart/wit fotografie. Mijn reistijd was jammer genoeg veel te kort om dit prachtig land in al zijn uithoeken te kunnen ontdekken, maar ik hoop er ooit terug naartoe te kunnen! En het was hier dat ik voor het eerst sedert lang opnieuw ben gaan fotograferen….
Mon séjour à Cuba était beaucoup plus qu’un voyage de vacances ordinaire. Ce voyage m’a donné l’occasion de me familiariser avec le mode de vie et le travail du Cubain moyen. Mais aussi avec son histoire parfois tumultueuse et la façon dont le peuple cubain parvient à s’organiser dans la vie quotidienne, ce qui n’est pas toujours une tâche facile. Cela m’a procuré des points de vue qui échappent trop souvent à l’attention du touriste moyen. Parce que j’ai pu pénétrer dans cette société un peu plus loin que les clichés touristiques habituels, ce voyage fut une expérience unique. C’est précisément la raison pour laquelle j’ai consciemment opté pour la photographie traditionnelle en noir et blanc. Mon temps de séjour était malheureusement bien trop court pour pouvoir découvrir ce pays magnifique dans tous ses coins, mais j’espère pouvoir y retourner un jour! Et c’est ici que pour la première fois depuis longtemps j’ai recommencé à photographier …
My Cuba trip was much more than a normal vacation trip. It gave me the opportunity to get acquainted with the way of life and work of the average Cuban. But also with the sometimes tumultuous history and how the Cuban people manage to organize themselves in daily life, which is not always an easy task. It yielded numerous insights that too often escape from the attention of an average tourist. Because I was able to penetrate a little further into their society than the usual tourist clichés, this trip became a unique experience. That is precisely why I consciously opted for traditional black and white photography. My travel time was unfortunately too short to be able to discover this beautiful country in all its corners, but I hope to be able to return there someday! And it was here that for the first after a long time I started photographing again ….
